Church of Saint Pio of Pietrelcina (Renzo Piano)
Churches & Shrine ♿ Accessible
Consecrated in 2004 and designed by architect Renzo Piano, the Church of Saint Pio of Pietrelcina is one of Italy's largest modern places of worship: its arches of Apricena stone open like a fan and hold thousands of faithful, while the immense forecourt hosts open-air celebrations.
Inside and in the lower church are the golden mosaics by Father Marko Ivan Rupnik, telling the lives of Saint Francis and Saint Pio. Built for the great numbers of modern pilgrimage, it surprises with its silence and light.
