Church of Saint Onuphrius the Hermit

Among the oldest churches in San Giovanni Rotondo, Sant'Onofrio has medieval origins (13th–14th c.): according to an epigraph, now illegible, it was built as a "royal work" by Frederick II of Swabia in 1231.

Fallen into ruin in the Napoleonic era, it was reopened for worship in 1914 and restored in 1955, when 14th-century frescoes came to light. The Romanesque-Gothic façade has an ogival portal, a double oculus and a crowning of hanging arches. The Madonna del Monte Carmelo is venerated here (feast on 16 July).
